The Context - Why This Question Exists
TAB NZ is the only legally-licensed sports betting operator inside New Zealand. It's a statutory body that funds racing and amateur sport. When you bet at TAB NZ, you're contributing to those causes - that matters to a lot of Kiwis. The catch is that TAB NZ has a domestic monopoly, and monopolies don't tend to compete on price.
Offshore sportsbooks (the kind we review on this site) operate outside NZ jurisdiction, typically licensed in Curacao, Malta, or Cyprus. They can't legally market to Kiwi customers, but Kiwis can access them and bet at them - and millions do. NZ law doesn't criminalise individual punters at offshore sites; the law focuses on operators.
From December 2026, NZ is rolling out a domestic licensing regime for online casino gambling. That'll change the landscape over time, but the current question - 'where should I bet right now?' - still has a clear answer for most Kiwi punters: it depends on what you bet on, and what you value.
