Rugby Betting Markets Explained
The range of rugby markets at modern sportsbooks is massive. Here's every market you'll come across and when to use each one.
Match Winner (Head-to-Head)
Pick who wins. In rugby union you usually get three options: Home, Draw, or Away (1X2). In league, draws are rare and some bookies offer two-way markets with a draw refund. This is where most punters start, and honestly, it's where most stay. Nothing wrong with keeping it simple.
Handicap Betting (Line Betting)
The most popular advanced market in rugby. The bookie gives one team a virtual head start to level things out. All Blacks -14.5 against Argentina? They need to win by 15+ for the bet to pay out. This is the market you want when the favourite's match winner odds are too short to bother with. Super Rugby handicap lines usually sit between 2.5 and 15.5 points.
Total Points (Over/Under)
Will both teams score more or less than a set number combined? A typical test match line is around 45.5 total points. Perfect when you've got a feel for the pace and style of the game but can't pick a winner. High-scoring sides like the Chiefs or attacking-first test matches often create good "over" spots.
First/Last/Anytime Tryscorer
These are some of the most exciting markets in rugby. First tryscorer pays the most (usually 6.00-15.00 for backs), last tryscorer is similar, and anytime tryscorer (a try at any point) pays lower odds but hits more often. Quick wingers and the All Blacks' back three are always popular picks for first tryscorer.
Winning Margin
Predict the victory margin in bands - 1-12 points, 13-24, 25+. Pays better than match winner because you need to be more specific. Useful when you've got a strong view on how dominant one team will be. Super Rugby games often land within 12 points; test blowouts can go past 30.
Half-Time / Full-Time
Who's leading at halftime AND at fulltime? Enhanced odds because you need to nail both. The favourite leading at both is the most common outcome, but comebacks happen - and when you spot one coming, the odds are juicy.
Same Game Multis / Bet Builders
Combine picks from the same match into one bet. All Blacks to win + Over 45.5 points + Caleb Clarke anytime tryscorer. High risk, but the payouts can be massive. Rooster.bet and 22bet both have solid same game multi builders for rugby.
